Every year tens of thousands of tourists are known to enter the Everest region for various purposes. The local government and the National Park issues permits because of which the permits for Everest Base Camp Trek, and other treks in the region is a must. While some aim to trek, some want to do a mountain flight, skydiving in Syangboche, mountaineering and so on. The rural structure of the region has been a benefit in terms of onboarding trekkers and climbing fanatics every year for the region. This also means the place earns a decent amount in the form of entry fees and taxes on other fun activities that are available in the region.
Mandatory Permit/Entry Fees
1.Local Tourism Fee charged by Khumbu PasangLhamu Rural Municipality (Mandatory)
The permit fees for trekkers in the Everest region until the August of 2024 was NRs. 2000/- for all the trekkers, foreigners as well as SAARC countries. The fee has now been updated to the rate mentioned below. This is just a one-time fee, but the trekkers must ensure they have the original permit or its picture on their phone in order to check out of the Everest region/National Park area once they finish their trek.
- For SAARC Countries (excluding Nepalese)- Nrs. 2000/-
- For China- Nrs. 2000/-
- For other countries- Nrs. 3000/-
Children below the age of 10, Nepalese nationals, and diplomats are not subjected to pay the fee. In order to obtain the permit, every trekker is required to submit their original passports to the ticketing officer at the Tourist Information Center/Ticket Counter at Lukla.
The local government issues Trek Card (if original passport is provided) as well as the paper permits (for passport photos and photocopies) for each of their trekkers. This does not include the non-paying trekkers. The trekkers can also register themselves for their future treks in the region through Khumbu Trek Card website by filling in all the necessary details. The permit fee needs to be paid at the Tourist Information Center, Lukla in person after which the Trek Card will be issued to the trekkers.
2. Sagarmatha National Park Fee (Mandatory)
- For SAARC Countries (excluding Nepalese)- Nrs. 1500/-
- For foreign nationals- Nrs. 3000/-
- For Nepalese- Rs. 100/-
Note: This is just a one-time fee, but the trekkers must ensure they have the original permit or its picture on their phone in order to check out of the National Park area once they finish their trek.
For the mountaineers however, there must be an additional $500 deposited at the office of Sagarmatha National Park based in Kathmandu, which will be returned to the mountaineers upon their arrival back from their expedition. 3. Entry Fees at the Monasteries
On the trekking route, you’ll particularly come across Pangboche Monastery at Pangboche, and Tengboche Monastery. Most trekkers want to make the most of their trek and love to visit these monasteries. The Pangboche Monastery entry fee is Rs. 250/- per person as of early 2025 which may vary at the time you are reading this post. Tengboche Monastery, on the other hand, requires trekkers to pay an entry fee of Rs. 300/- per person.
