The Monkey Travels' Uncharted Journey
A story narrated by the Founder of The Monkey Travels, Mr. Sonam Tamang
Greetings, fellow wanderers! I’m Sonam, a humble soul who once trod the mountain paths as a porter, then climbed to the peaks as a guide. Today, I invite you to join me in a tale of The Monkey Travels that goes beyond the trails—a story of resilience, empowerment, and a mission to change the narrative for the unsung heroes of the trekking world.
Unseen Struggles & Learning on the Trail
First of all, picture the Himalayan foothills in 2010, where I started as a porter at the age of 13, carrying dreams on my back for trekkers who sought the majestic beauty of the mountains. The weight was not just in the physical load but also in the silent struggles that porters faced—the lack of fair wages, proper gear, and the respect they rightfully deserved.
However, determined to transcend the limitations, I immersed myself in learning English during those chilly nights in the mountain lodges. The language has now become my passport to communication, a tool to bridge the gap between the silent struggles of the porters and the voices of those who needed to hear their stories.
As my proficiency in English grew, so did my role. I transformed from a porter to a porter-guide; now the disparity in compensation became even more apparent. The mountains whispered stories of uneducated youths and those deemed too old to find work. I became a liaison between trekkers and the silent heroes who carried the weight of the journey on their shoulders. Hence, it was during these transitions that the seed of change was planted.
The Monkey Travels Takes Root
In the heart of the mountains, The Monkey Travels is now born—a trekking company with a purpose. Beyond the beauty of the trails, our mission is to create local job opportunities for the less fortunate. Because, we believe that everyone, regardless of education or age, deserves a chance for dignified employment.
On today’s date, I stand proud as the founder of a trekking company built on principles of empowerment. Our mission at The Monkey Travels is clear—to avenge the exploitation of porters by providing fair wages, proper equipment, and a dignified working environment. And our vision extends beyond the trekking paths. We actively seek out individuals who, due to circumstances or societal norms, find themselves excluded from the job market. Thus, The Monkey Travels is a gateway for uneducated youths and those considered too old to start anew.
Nonetheless, the journey doesn’t end here; it evolves. We are a movement, and we’re rewriting the story for porters, ensuring they are respected, valued, and empowered. In other words, every trek with us becomes an act of solidarity with those who carry the spirit of the mountains on their shoulders—an investment in local communities.
Let us Trek with Purpose
As you lace up your boots for the next adventure, remember that your journey is part of a larger story—one that seeks justice, equality, and empowerment for the unsung heroes of the trails. Join us at The Monkey Travels and be a part of a trekking experience that goes beyond the peaks—a journey of purpose, respect, and the celebration of the human spirit.
Consequently, it’s a decision to support fair wages, create opportunities, and uplift lives. Together, we’re forging a new path—one that leads not just to mountain peaks but to brighter futures. Therefore, trek with purpose, and together, let’s create a story that transcends the trails and leaves a lasting impact on lives.
The weight was not just in the physical load but also in the silent struggles that porters faced—the lack of fair wages, proper gear, and the respect they rightfully deserved.
